A payphone is simply a telephone that requires the insertion of coins to make calls.

The range of Payphones available include models that are designed to control the telephone usage of a teenager or another member of a household and models that are designed for use by the general public in un-supervised locations.
 
Payphones can be connected to standard telephone lines. They are completely self-contained units in that they contain all the information that is necessary to enable the payphone to determine when coins should be inserted.
 
It is also possible for the owner of the payphone to vary the call charges so that a profit can be made on each call. This flexibility is also useful for accommodating changes in the telephone company's call charges.
 
There are also available payphones that don't require cash. Instead they use pre-paid cards which can be purchased in £10 units. Alternatively a used card can be refreshed by paying £10 to the management company. This can be done by credit card.
