A telephone system consists of a control unit that connects internal telephones to external lines. There are usually more external lines than internal telephones.

The main function of the telephone system is to give the internal telephones access to the external lines and to enable calls to be made and transferred between the internal telephones.
 
Telephone systems can range in size from simple 1 line and 4 telephone extension systems to complex systems with hundreds of lines and thousands of telephone extensions covering more than one site.
 
Most modern telephone systems can be programmed to meet the needs of any business. They can also support both analogue and digital lines and a variety of devices from simple telephones to complex digital devices that can be used for both voice and data communications.
 
It is also possible to attach other devices such as fax machines, cordless phones and answering machine to a telephone system in the same way that they can be connected to a standard telephone line.
